Meet Our People

Jon Kirkland – Managing Director

Jon has worked in the industry for over 30 years covering most aspects of civil engineering and groundworks. Having worked at senior director level in a multi-national civil engineering main contractor along with subcontracting experience it gives Jon the all-round experience in this industry that keeps us focused on the things that matter.

Jon is a hands-on proactive individual who likes the day to day challenge. Having joined Enviromontel in 2010 to set up the Civil Engineering company he is now running all the Montel group of companies, providing a base for others to excel at what they do. All the employees in whichever business you deal with will have the same ethos and values.

Jon has known and worked with Ian Ansell who set Laser Civil Engineering up in 1979 for a period in excess of 25 years and they are both very focused on ensuring their staff are ready to fulfill your requirements to the best of their abilities. If you would like to meet up or just call to discuss anything you can think we can help you with, whether its civil engineering, flow monitoring, specialist installations, safety rescue or training then please do not hesitate to contact Jon on the office number or via email.

Simon Turbutt – Director

Simon joined Montel in 2013 with 25 years in the civil engineering and construction sectors. Beginning his career with Monk Construction he embarked upon a commercial path working on a variety of schemes including Motorways, Trunk Roads, Land Reclamation, Bridges, Drainage schemes and the like spanning the acquisition eras of Trafalgar House and Kvaerner Group of Companies. Seeking a more hands on role, Simon left Kvaerner to join Dean & Dyball Construction Ltd where he took on a changed role and went into site management. Working as a Project Manager before becoming a Contracts Manager, Simon spent several years working on Waste Transfer Schemes, Substations, Hospital Enabling works, Highways, Wind Farms, Reinforced Concrete Structures and Streetworks.

Following on from Simon’s years at Dean and Dyball he took up the position of Civils Manager at AW Rail and Civil Engineering where he was heavily involved with their multi million pound scheme to provide reinforced concrete structures and infrastructure to the Flue Gas Desulphurisation Scheme at Rugeley Power Station. Unfortunately the impact of the recession necessitated the need to move on and he took on the role of Area Manager at G F Tomlinson & Sons based in Worcester. Primarily overseeing the regions work load of AMP4 drainage for Severn Trent and Minor Works Framework for the Environment Agency other areas of experience included Industrial Civil Engineering Projects, School Extensions, Super Market Construction and other building schemes.

Keen to remain within the Civil Engineering Sector and be involved with a new and up and coming company, Simon joined Jon Kirkland at Montel Civil Engineering in the capacity of Operations Manager and is responsible for the management and delivery of all civil engineering schemes in the business.

Mervyn Miles – Estimator/ Buyer

Mervyn would rather not say just how many years’ experience he has accrued in the construction industry, but he does lay claim to being one of the first in his department to have a battery operated calculator!

His long journey started with the County Council’s Architects Department, where he progressed to chartered QS status, before being enticed over to the contracting side with Laser C.E. Spending over 13 years here he helped run and develop the QS, Estimating and Buying functions on a variety of civil engineering projects, before ultimately setting up the Build division for the group.

At this point, further career development called and he moved into the groundworks specialisation, spending some 12 years concentrating on residential/commercial groundworks and infrastructure for both Broadway Building Co (Midlands) Ltd and M. Lambe Construction Ltd.

We have been fortunate to lure Mervyn back, to work with both former and new colleagues to help develop and promote Montel Civil Engineering, He will be concentrating on the estimating and buying functions, and generally making his knowledge and experience available to all.
