About Montel Civil Engineering
Montel Civil Engineering evolved from a legacy which started over thirty years ago.
In September of 1979, Ian Ansell founded Laser Civil Engineering (LCE) who went on to be former Group Managing Director and owner of Laser Holdings (UK) Limited. LCE was particularly active in the construction of access roads and other infrastructure for private developments across central England. The business had increased its public highways work, in particular the upgrading of carriageways around new developments, and also diversified into managing the remediation of contaminated land. LCE acted as both main contractor and sub-contractor with clients, who were a mix of private property developers, local and central government highways authorities, and large national contractors. Then in November 2005 Laser Holdings (UK) Ltd was acquired by a national construction conglomerate.
However, one of Mr Ansell’s other businesses which was not included in the sale was Enviromontel Ltd. This company was set up in 2003 to deliver flow monitoring solutions to the Water industry. Mr Ansell had recognised an opening in a very niche market, but to deliver this required a large capital investment and provision of a quality service. Mr Ansell therefore appointed a team of highly experienced water industry professionals with a proven track record along with making a substantial investment to acquire the specialist equipment and vehicles needed to carry out the work.
The non-reliance upon bank borrowings has enabled the business to control growth and development to a level that ensures a first class service delivery to all clients.
In 2010 the company recognised a need to diversify into other areas of work in order to protect itself against the low spends by the Water Companies during their 5 year budgetary AMP period, which often resulted in weak workloads during the final 12-18months for its contractors. Mr Ansell felt the construction industry was lacking competent civil engineering contractors, and had no hesitation in creating Montel Civil Engineering as a part of Enviromontel Limited. An experienced team of ex-Laser employees were put in place, and soon many old Laser clients like Bloor Homes, Redrow, and Persimmon etc were expressing a strong desire to engage a contractor with a proven track record. Montel won its first contract at Bracknell, a £4.5M Infrastructure package for Redrow/Persimmon JV. The duration of these works was 52 weeks
